This is a true story.
Only the names have been changed to save embarrassment of the parties involved.
While doing the feasibility study for the viability of this business I interviewed the owner/manager of a large motorcycle business just north of Brisbane, Queensland.
The owner told me he already had a web servicing contract with another company. He was extremely happy with the extra sales he was getting. He quoted me an extra twenty to twenty five prospective customers walking in the door each week, all knowing beforehand what they had come to look at and buy. Sales were up by more than 22 motorcycles per month.
He was not happy with the service though. The following were serious issues
He did not have his own website as such but was a "sub web" of the company he contracted to for the service. (He was not getting what he paid for and search engines were less likely to find him)
The company he contracted to was located in Melbourne and sent out a Brisbane subcontractor once a month to take pictures of the new stock and relay them to Melbourne for addition to the website. (obviously with his large stock turnover he needed more frequent updates of his stock on the website)
The update invariably forgot to delete the stock that had been sold during the previous month (customers came in only to find what they came for was not there)
He paid over a thousand dollars for the creation of the website and was paying $250 per month for the service visits Plus a fee per page for new stock additions.
The owner was not aware that people in the
region knowing of his business could not access his website by putting
his web domain name directly into their browser (ie.
www.****************.com.au)
To find it, people had to do a web search for "motorcycles" then from a major
Australian hub site which sells nearly everything they would have to scroll down
the page to find the motorcycles link and click that. They would then be taken
to a page where they would have to select the location for where they wanted to
purchase. Clicking the link there would take them to another page which listed
the sub web address of this particular motorcycle sales company which they would
have to follow to view the stock on hand.
For all the problems with this website and the updating service provided, this company was still getting greatly improved sales from the website.
For less than half the cost you could improve your sales in a similar way by having your own direct access domain name website, a local service company providing frequent visits and prompt reliable updates and a website guaranteed to appear in all major search engines
